Frequently Asked Questions
When does recruiting start?
Sophomore to junior year is when it becomes real.
- Division I coaches can’t initiate contact until June 15 after sophomore year
- But they are evaluating players well before that
If you wait until junior year, you are already behind.
What do coaches look for?
More than just scoring average:
- Tournament scoring (especially multi-day events)
- Strength of schedule (AJGA, elite events)
- Rankings (JGS, WAGR)
- Consistency under pressure
- Attitude and coachability
A 71 in a strong field is more valuable than a 68 in a weak field.
How important are rankings?
Important, but not everything.
- Validate performance
- Help coaches compare players
- Used as a filter, not a final decision
Rankings are your resume, not your identity.
What scoring average is needed?
- Top Division I: 68–72
- Mid Division I: 70–74
- Low Division I / High Division II: 72–76
- Division II / Division III / NAIA: 74–80
Context matters: course difficulty and field strength are critical.
